Imagery: Forming a mental or physical picture from words, pictures, or your other senses.
Example One:
"The Radley place jutted into a sharp curve beyond our house. Walking south, one faced its porch; the sidewalk turned and ran beside the lot. The house was low, was once white with a deep front porch and green shutters, but had long ago darkened to the color of the slate-grey yard around it. Rain rotted shingles drooped over the eaves of the veranda; oak trees kept the sun away. The remains of a picket drunkenly guarded the front yard-a ‘swept’yard that was never swept-where Johnson grass and rabbit-tobacco grew in abundance" (8). This quote describes vividly the Mr. Radley's house and how it looks. Imagery creates an image in your mind and this quote is a good representation of describing what the house looks like (visual imagery). The picture is of the Radley house before it became out of shape. Emphasis was put on vivid colors to really show the difference between before and its current state.
Example Two:
"At first we saw nothing but a kudzu-covered front porch, but a closer inspection revealed an arc of water defending from the leaves and splashing in the yellow circle of the street light, some ten feet from source to earth, it seemed to us" (51). This scene is a second great example of setting up the scene so you really feel like you were there. Imagery is an image created in your mind by either words or pictures in order to describe something. This quote really describes the house and gives you a good image of the scene (a good example of imagery). This quote kind of connects to the picture. The street is visible and is outside the Radley house.
