Atticus is an intelligent and good hearted lawyer who fights for racial justice and equality. In the following paragraphs we will be analyzing the strong-will and diligence of Atticus throughout the book. Atticus is a great parent and an overall good man in this book, he mends to his children and he fights for justice against nearly inevitable odds.
Atticus is the protagonist in To Kill a Mockingbird. He defended an innocent man against a racially biased jury. Racism is the antagonist that he fought against in the story. When Jem was being disrespectful to Mrs. Dubose for making racist comments, Atticus still made him apologize (Lee 104). That shows that Atticus is fighting against racism by using his good upbringing. He is a major character that has a positive influence on the plot of the story and he fights the broad antagonist that was racism in his community.
Atticus is also a very intelligent and good hearted character in the book. An example of that is where Atticus talks about how some people use their welfare checks to by whiskey while their children are hungry and crying (34). This shows that he can recognize social issues and be aware of the injustice that goes on all around them. Awareness of the issues are the first step to solving them. Atticus also defends racial justice in Tom Robinson's case even though the rest of the town members dislike him for defending a black man. For example Tom Robinson is announced guilty without any evidence (211). Even though he had to face a racist jury that made there decision the second they saw that Tom was black, Atticus still gave it his best to help Tom out. This just goes to show that Atticus cares for humanity no matter what their skin color is.
The main conflict that Atticus faced in the book was obviously Tom Robinson's trial simply because this was one of the main themes of the story. It represented all of the racism going on in the southern United States at the time. Atticus works extremely hard to make sure that Tom gets the fair trial that he deserves. Unfortunately he failed. He however did not go down without a strong fight for justice. Atticus worked hard to show that there was no evidence to support that Tom Robinson committed the crime (205). Despite the obvious fact that he was not guilty he still was concluded guilty. Atticus did all that he could.
It seems that Lee was trying to make Atticus seem like a good-hearted, soft-spoken character, that always knows what to say to lead his kids on a better path. Atticus had two important statements in the book that explain his outlook on life. The first is that you have to take a walk in someone’s shoes to really get to know them (30). The second is when he said to fight with your head not your fists (76). Atticus respects everyone no matter what their skin color is or their views.
